Professional washing techniques to get your home windows sparkling & clean
Whether your home has brand new windows or you’re getting the most out of the life of your tried and true windows, you want them to not only be clean and clear, you want to ensure that you are doing everything in your power to keep them in good shape for years to come.

We've put together some tips for you to keep your windows clean and maintained between your regularly scheduled professional cleanings.

Clean your windows like a professional
Here are our best tips of the trade for your at-home window cleaning.

To clean your windows:
  • Make sure your windows are cool to the touch and not in direct sunlight. If the windows are too warm, the water-mixture will dry before you've had a chance to clean it off properly.
  • Remove dirt and smudges with a water and vinegar mixture OR water, vinegar, and mild soap. See our recommended recipes below.
    • If you're cleaning your windows for the first time in a while, use the following recipe:
      • 2 cups water
      • 1/4 cup white vinegar
      • 1/2 teaspoon dish detergent (Dawn works best)
    • If you've already had your windows professionally cleaned, you can use this recipe for in-between professional washes:
      • 1 c. water
      • 1 c. white vinegar
  • Mix your preferred recipe in either a bucket (great for bulk/outside cleaning) or spray bottle (perfect for cleaning inside windows).
  • If using a bucket, use a soft brush or mop on a long pole (think: home version of our reach and wash system!) and lightly scrub the windows. If using the spray bottle, spray and then wipe with a soft, clean cloth (make sure your cloth is lint-free!)
    • Note: we don't recommend using paper towels or newspaper for cleaning your windows. Both can leave behind infuriating streaks and residue.
  • Before the cleaning solution dries, rinse it off with clean water.
  • Starting in the top-left corner, use a squeegee and wipe in an "s" shape. Be sure to wipe off the blade after each pull. Dry any remaining spots of water with a clean, lint-free cloth.

Screen Cleaning
Another big part of keeping your windows clean between professional washes is making sure you also clean your window screens. There's a whole lot of dust and dirt that can accumulate on those puppies, which is why you'll want to follow these instructions if you're going to be washing your own windows.
  • Clean window screens by gently a vacuuming with a brush attachment.
  • If you are not able to get them fully clean with this method then you can remove the screen and wash on a flat surface with a mild soap and water mixture and a soft-bristled brush.
  • Allow to air dry fully then reinstall.

Window washing pro-tips
  • Starting on one side, wash window left to right. On the other side, wash up and down. That way, if there are any streaks, you know which side they're on.
  • With any cleaning mixture, try it in an inconspicuous place before you use it on the whole surface to ensure that it will not alter your glass.

Protect your investment and avoid use of the following on your windows:
  1. Abrasives like razor blades, putty knife and steel wool.
  2. Petroleum-based or caustic cleaners as they can harm your finishes and glass.
  3. Pressure washing your windows, doors or skylights and this can harm seals.

Bottom line, ensure you take care of your windows like you do any other area of your home, regular cleaning and maintenance lengthens your enjoyment and use!
